This school year both kickers for Clarke Central High School’s football team are freshmen.

In recent years, freshmen on varsity teams have become the norm, and there is no exception this year. Two freshmen recently joined CCHS’s football program and have been named varsity kickers.

Freshmen William Downs and Victor Silva have only recently become football players, but each of them has their own story of how they became active in the sport.

“My stepdad had been wanting me to tryout for the football team ever since seventh grade because he thought I had a good leg and that I was a good kicker, and I thought it was a good idea. I thought it would be cool,” Silva said.

While Silva just began playing football last year, Downs said he had previously played.

“I used to play when I was eight years old, but I stopped playing,” Downs said.

Despite the fact the two kickers are only freshmen, head coach Ahren Self feels confident in both.

“They were good. We tried them out, and they’ve done a great job so far,” Self said.

Downs and Silva both said they enjoy being freshman kickers.

“Being a freshman varsity kicker, that’s a good opportunity, and I’m going to stick with it,” Silva said.

Each player plans on coming back for the next three football seasons, which leaves Self optimistic for their development.

“I kind of like having them because you know you’re going to have kickers for the next four years,” Self said. “They’re only going to get better and better and their legs are going to get stronger as they mature and they get older.”
